Acute Chemical Incident Response

Emergency First Aid & Poison Helpline

If victim is unconscious, not breathing, or having seizures, call 911 / 112 immediately. For chemical exposure guidance, contact Poison Help.

DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING

Inducing vomiting with corrosive caustics (drain cleaners, bleach, acids) re-exposes the esophagus and throat to severe chemical burns.

1. Check Consciousness

If the victim is unconscious, having seizures, or unable to swallow, place them on their side (recovery position) and dial 911 / 112 immediately.

2. Rinse Mouth Gently

Wipe away excess powder or liquid from the lips. If conscious and able to swallow comfortably, have them take small sips of water.

3. Grab the Container

Bring the exact chemical bottle to the phone so you can read active ingredients, EPA registration numbers, and volume swallowed.

4. Call Poison Control

Dial 1-800-222-1222. Registered toxicologists and nurses will provide custom case management for the exact chemical.
